The Building Energy Act (GEG) is a German law that came into force on 1 November 2020. It was slightly amended again on 1 January 2023. The GEG combines the former EnEG, EnEV and EEWärmeG laws. It contains various requirements for the energy-efficient refurbishment and efficiency of buildings. The aim is to reduce the energy consumption of buildings in order to achieve the climate targets in the building sector.
The GEG specifies energy requirements for new and existing buildings that are heated or air-conditioned. These requirements are based on the primary energy demand and the transmission heat loss. The GEG contains specifications for the use of renewable energies.
For example, new buildings must cover a certain proportion of their energy requirements from renewable energies. For certain buildings, energy advice must be provided in order to identify potential savings. The GEG also includes the obligation to have an energy performance certificate issued for buildings. The energy certificate documents the energy consumption and energy efficiency of a building.
